Dr. Catalina Iordache
Biography
Catalina joined imec-SMIT, Vrije Universiteit Brussel in 2014, and obtained her PhD on the transnational flow of media content in the online environment in 2022. Her main areas of expertise are audiovisual production and distribution, streaming services, public service media, European media policy, and comparative analysis. During her time at SMIT, she has also conducted research on the topics of media literacy, digital literacy, and e-inclusion, and acted as Teaching Assistant for the Bachelor's in Social Sciences programme.
Catalina has been conducting postdoctoral research as part of the following projects: PSM-AP: Public Service Media in the Age of Platforms (2022–2025), and SRP Media—the VUB’s Strategic Research Programme on Media Economics (2023–2027). She is also Project Manager of RePIM, the MSCA Doctoral Network on Revisioning Public Interest Media (2026–2029).
Since 2022, she is a Guest Professor in the VUB Department of Communication Sciences, previously as co-titular of the course Media, Culture and Globalisation Theories, and currently as titular of the course European Media Markets, in the Digital Media in Europe Master’s programme.
Before joining academia, Catalina worked as a project manager in the cultural field with a community arts organisation based in Edinburgh, Scotland. After her move to Brussels in 2013, she pursued the international MSc in Communication Studies at the VUB. Catalina also holds a BA in International Relations, European Studies from the University of Bucharest.
