On 13-14 March, the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union organised the Media Innovation Xchange, a European conference on innovation and digital transformation in the media sector. The two-day event, held in Brussels, focused on new and emerging technologies that are confronting the media sector with unprecedented challenges. During discussion panels and keynote addresses, policymakers, media professionals and academia shared experiences, knowledge and best practices on a variety of topics, from AI and video games, to news, broadcasting, and ethics. Researchers from imec-SMIT, VUB were also invited to take part as media experts:
- Professor Ike Picone moderated the session on INNOVATION TO COUNTER, DETECT, AND REFUTE DISINFORMATION which focused on how AI and other technologies can play a pivotal role in tackling disinformation and what is needed by the news media sector to maintain quality of news media production.
- Postdoctoral researcher Catalina Iordache was a panelist on the session DATA DRIVEN MEDIA INDUSTRY, which discussed the impact of big data on the media industry, including practices of personalisation, concerns over discoverablity and privacy, and the use of metadata.
