Prof. Dr. Luciano Morganti

Luciano Morganti is intrigued by the interaction between (new) communication technologies and democratic processes. He likes to think and reflect upon the concept and idea of the Public Sphere and in particular of the European Public Sphere. His research and attention are dedicated to social, political and communicative aspects of citizens’ participation, citizens’ empowerment and participatory democracy. He does this with a special focus on new media on the backdrop of the EU integration process and governance and the EU information and communication policies.

Moreover, he is passionate about the ongoing discussion concerning the governance of the Internet and the innovation new media bring about in our culture(s), society(ies), and politics. Finally, he is known to be an enthusiastic teacher who loves to share his knowledge with the students and is always open to a critical and intelligent debate during his classes.

As a professor and senior researcher at the VUB/ES in the Communication Department, he teaches in the international master New Media and Society in Europe. The courses I teach are related to New Media, the EU and the European Public Sphere, and Internet Governance.

He graduated in Philosophy at La Sapienza Rome (1994), after that, I got a master degree from the College of Europe – Bruges (1997) in European Advanced Studies – Human Resources Development and a master degree from the ISC – Saint Louis – Brussels (2002) in Interactive Multimedia Project & Cyber-communication. In 2004, he defended his Ph.D. in Communication Studies at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

Previously, he was a professor at Vesalius College and he has been teaching in universities and programmes at La Sapienza – Roma, the University of Milwaukee Wisconsin and La Cattolica – Milano and the College of Europe Development Office.
