Nathan Pelgrims
Biography
Nathan Pelgrims holds an MA in Philosophy (UGent) and an MSc in Communication Studies (VUB), specialising in Journalism and Media in Europe. He completed a traineeship at the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Liaison Office With the European Union and Belgium. Before joining SMIT, he has worked as an Information Specialist Research at KU Leuven Artes Research, where he supported and trained researchers at the Faculty of Arts in the area of digital humanities, open science, and research data management.
Nathan is interested in the crossroads of ethics, communication, and technology. This interest has given rise to investigations in different subjects, such as the impact of AI-technologies on our societal norms, like intellectual property. In relation to his other interests in sustainability and sustainable food systems, he has also studied social perceptions around meat consumption and dietary change.
Currently, Nathan is working at the Knowledge Centre Data & Society as a research and projects assistant. By supporting organisations with the ethical, social, and legal decision-making processes around AI, he works to promote the responsible use of AI and data-driven technologies in Flanders, focusing especially on the use of AI at work. Additionally, he is involved in amai!, the citizen science project aiming to make AI innovation more accessible to and relevant for the general public in Flanders.
