CresCine, an EU Horizon Europe-backed project aimed at boosting the competitiveness of European small markets, shared its insights on the state of the European film industry during the Marché du Film Industry Insights Day at the Cannes Film Festival. SMIT-VUB, as a CresCine partner, was represented by Ivana Kostovska at the Cannes Festival’s Marché du Film session. She presented insights on the international circulation of European films in cinemas and on VOD, drawing on extensive data analysis. On the 19th of May, Future Media Hubs and Creative Europe Media hosted a session at Cannes Next, the innovation-focused program of the Cannes Film Festival. Titled “How can AI drive success for you, your team and organization?”, the session featured presentations and a panel from some of Europe's top media professionals to explore the latest advancements in media technology. Among the speakers was Ulysse Maes, a first-year PhD researcher at the MEP unit, who was invited to present his startup, Scribewave, which specializes in multimodal content conversion. He showcased how Scribewave integrates different multimodal models, streamlining the process of converting speech to text in various languages, addressing the industry's growing need for efficient and accurate localization. The event provided a platform to connect with key stakeholders and discuss the future of content conversion in the film industry. In the panel discussion following his presentation, Ulysse highlighted the ethical and environmental challenges of generative AI models, and his belief in the future of efficient small models.
